C A N C E R I M M U Approximately 8.2 MILLION PEOPLE DIE OF CANCER worldwide each year. The number of NEW CASES OF CANCER is expected to rise to 22 MILLION annually within the next two decades. T he idea to use a patient's immune system to fight cancer was originally developed by Dr. William Coley in the late 1800s. He noticed patients who developed bacterial infections after surgery fared better than patients who did not, and postulated the infection awakened their immune system. The immune system then fought the cancer in addition to the infection.
