T
he idea to use a patient's immune system to fight cancer was
originally developed by Dr. William Coley in the late 1800s.
He noticed patients who developed bacterial infections
after surgery fared better than patients who did not, and
postulated the infection awakened their immune system.
The immune system then fought the cancer in addition
to the infection.
