The cause of cleft lip and palate is still unknown in spite of it being one of the most common birth anomalies in the world, affecting one in every 700 babies born in North America annually. July is nationally recognized as Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness and Prevention month to bring awareness to the condition and promote further research. 16
