Not to be confused with mental illness, mental health is a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, copes with the normal stresses of life, works productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). An estimated one in five Americans will be affected by a mental health condition in their lifetime. The CDC estimates that only 17 percent of the adult population in the United States is in an optimal state of mental health. MAY: MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS
