I n the last century, we have made the most significant advances in medicine. Now that we have unlocked the human genome, we are making tremendous discoveries that are quickly translated to new therapies through clinical trials. More clinical research is conducted on the campus of the Texas Medical Center than any other place in the world. We have the greatest collection of scientists and researchers in our major academic institutions, yet their efforts are internally focused and not aligned across organizations. We are working to change that with the creation of the TMC Clinical Research Institute. We collectively treat more than 10 million patients on an annual basis in one of the most diverse cities in the United States. This is an ideal environment to establish the largest and most efficient discovery platforms on the planet. By aligning our efforts, we will attract industry that will bring the most promising therapies and medical devices to Houston so we can deliver the broadest range of treatment options to our patients. As research funding continues to decline, it is more important than ever that we work together to reduce costs and redundancies and create new platforms to accelerate discovery. We hope that our research leaders will seize this opportunity and embrace this bold vision. We can all be greater than the sum of our parts. President's Perspective
